Catalyst Press is a small, independent press founded by Jessica Powers with the intention of bringing African literature to the United States, which also publishes books in South Africa in partnership with LAPA Uitgewers and Jive Media Africa.[1] Catalyst Press has published a wide variety of books in a wide variety of genres, including graphic novels, historical fiction, crime fiction, science, children's books and more. Powers felt drawn to African culture following her involvement in a program working with Kenyan and Somali refugee street youth in Nairobi. She earned her MFA in Creative Writing at UTEP and went on to complete graduate studies in African Literature.[2]
Catalyst Press has two publishing imprints, Powers Squared and Flare Books. Powers Squared has produced narrative non-fiction books under the direction of Matthew Powers, Jessica's brother, who has his PhD in oncological sciences.[2] The goal of this imprint is to help readers gain more interest in the scientific side of things by reuniting science with story. Flare Books produces books of various genres by authors from all over the world. The focus for Flare is on coming-of-age, cultural, historical, or geographical interests within their stories.[3]
Catalyst Press holds an annual online event during the first full week in December to celebrate and educate the world about African literature, called #ReadingAfrica. This event began in 2017 and has grown every year since then.[4]
