This submission appears to read more like an advertisement than an entry in an encyclopedia. Encyclopedia articles need to be written from a neutral point of view, and should refer to a range of independent, reliable, published sources, not just to materials produced by the creator of the subject being discussed. This is important so that the article can meet Wikipedia's verifiability policy and the notability of the subject can be established. Castor (legally Ciwit B.V. in the Netherlands and Castor Research Inc. in the United States) is a clinical solutions software company headquartered in Amsterdam, Netherlands.[1][2]
History
[edit]Castor was founded in 2012 by Derk Arts, a physician who developed the platform while completing his medical training.[3] The company initially served researchers at Dutch academic medical centers including Amsterdam UMC and VU University Medical Center.[3] In 2020, Castor raised US$12 million in Series A funding led by Two Sigma Ventures.[4] In 2021, the company raised US$45 million in Series B funding led by Eight Roads Ventures and F-Prime Capital.[1] At this time, Castor employed approximately 150 people and reported serving over 3,000 studies with 25,000 researchers worldwide.[1][3]
Products
[edit]Castor provides cloud-based software for clinical research.[5] The platform includes modules for electronic data capture (EDC), electronic patient-reported outcomes (ePRO) / eCOA, electronic consent (eConsent), and integration with electronic health records and wearable devices.[6] In 2024, Castor partnered with Microsoft to develop AI tools for clinical trials.[7]
Operations
[edit]Castor operates offices in Amsterdam, Netherlands and New York City, United States.[1][8]
Notable implementations
[edit]The World Health Organization used Castor's platform for the Solidarity Trial Vaccines across Colombia, Mali, and the Philippines in 2021.[9] Multiple peer-reviewed studies have documented use of Castor's platform:
A randomized controlled trial on digital consultations in heart failure care published in Nature Medicine (2024) used Castor EDC for data management across four Dutch medical centers.[10] A virtual reality study protocol for ICU survivors published in BMJ Open (2022).[11] The HORIZON-HE randomized controlled trial examining home telemonitoring in heart failure patients published in The Lancet (2021).[12]
Industry analysis
[edit]Everest Group's 2024 Life Sciences EDC Products assessment categorized Castor as a "Major Contender" among 20 electronic data capture vendors.[13] Market research firm SNS Insider reported in 2025 that the global eClinical solutions market was projected to reach US$31.90 billion by 2032.[14]
