CachyOS is a Linux distribution based on Arch Linux that aims to combine Arch's power and flexibility with out-of-the-box usability, and performance optimizations.[2][3][4] The distribution provides both a standard desktop edition and a handheld edition aimed at handheld gaming pcs, alongside an upcoming server edition[5]

History

[edit]

CachyOS was first released on July 3, 2021,[6] by German developer Peter Jung (ptr1337), alongside co-developer Vladislav Nepogodin (vnepogodin).

On December 3, 2025, CachyOS was granted a $250 per month sponsorship from Framework Computer.[7]

Features

[edit]

During development, special emphasis is placed on user-friendliness, performance, and security using pre-configured and optimized packages.[8]CachyOS ships with a specially-modified kernel that includes patches and tweaks not always present in upstream kernels, alongside a kernel manager for individual settings.[9][10]

To simplify the install process, CachyOS provides both a graphical installer based on Calamares, and a command-line installer. During installation, users can select from a wide variety of desktop environments or window managers - including KDE Plasma, GNOME, XFCE, COSMIC, and Sway. Other features provided include a hardware detection tool for drivers called chwd,[11] the included introductory software CachyOS Hello and a package installer.

CachyOS' available bootloaders are GRUB, systemd-boot, rEFInd, and Limine. Its supported filesystems are XFS, BTRFS, ext4, ZFS, F2FS, and Bcachefs. The CachyOS developers have recommended using BTRFS as the default filesystem.

Reception

[edit]

Due to its focus on out-of-the-box driver support, ease of installation, and performance optimization, CachyOS has quickly gained a large degree of popularity in the Linux gaming community, and has been seen as an alternative to SteamOS and Bazzite for mobile gaming pcs,[12][13][14] and an alternative to other Arch distributions that focus on user-friendliness such as Manjaro and EndeavourOS.

Distribution

[edit]

According to PC Games Hardware, CachyOS achieved a 2.54 percent share of the Linux market on Steam in its first year.[15] In July 2025, it became the most popular distribution on DistroWatch.[16][17][18] In August 2025, BoilingSteam found that CachyOS had become the third most used Linux distribution for gaming, based on ProtonDB data.[19]
