Community Transit Zip Shuttle is a microtransit service operated by Via Transportation and managed by Community Transit, serving several zones in Snohomish County, Washington. It launched as a one-year pilot in Alderwood (Lynnwood) in October 2022 and expanded in December 2024 to Arlington, Darrington, and Lake Stevens.[1]
History
[edit]Planning began in 2019 with input from local stakeholders in Lynnwood’s Alderwood neighborhood. A $1.08 million Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality grant funded the pilot operated by MedStar Transportation. The service launched on October 20, 2022, with four vehicles in the Alderwood zone.
By July 2023, it had 20,000 boardings from around 1,000 riders. A survey in late 2023 showed 94% public support, and CT’s Board approved permanent continuation on October 5, 2023.
In December 2024, Zip Shuttle expanded to Arlington, Darrington, and Lake Stevens on a 12–18 month pilot schedule.
Service zones
[edit]- Alderwood: Lynnwood (5 a.m.–10 p.m. daily)
- Arlington: Downtown & Smokey Point (5 a.m.–10 p.m.)
- Darrington: Town & Hwy 530 corridor (6 a.m.–8 p.m.)
- Lake Stevens: Central & north areas (5 a.m.–10 p.m.)[1]
Operations and technology
[edit]Booking is via the Zip Shuttle app (powered by Via) or by phone. The system groups riders traveling similar routes. Fares match CT’s local bus: $2.50 adults, $1.00 ORCA LIFT, free under‑19. Accepts ORCA cards, credit/debit, or exact cash.[1] All vehicles are ADA‑accessible; feature wheelchair ramps, bike racks, and optional child seats.[2]
Fleet
[edit]At launch, the fleet included one sedan and three seven‑passenger vans in CT livery. Additional vans were added as the service expanded. All vehicles are wheelchair‑equipped and integrated with the booking system.
Public reception
[edit]Officials praised Zip Shuttle as a “game changer” for local mobility.[2] A late‑2023 survey recorded 94% support. No major service complaints have been reported; CT continues to collect rider feedback.
Performance
[edit]By July 2023: ~20,000 boardings, ~1,000 riders. By late 2023: ~32,500 rides from ~1,400 unique users; first‑quarter 2024 saw ~39,000 boardings.[1] Zip Shuttle represented ~2.3% of CT’s total boardings in 2023.
