C. D. Monninger Ltd. was a British manufacturer of woodworking tools, blades, and saw-doctoring equipment. Based in London, the company was active from the late 19th century into the late 20th century. Its products included bandsaws, circular saws, saw-sharpening machinery, and cutter blocks, which were widely used in British industry and exported internationally.[1]

History

The firm was founded in 1867 by Charles Dietrich Monninger.[1] Early addresses included Ray Street, Clerkenwell, and later 124–126 Clerkenwell Road, London EC.[2]

By 1914, the company had offices and showrooms in Clerkenwell Road, a works in South Tottenham, and supplied saws and woodworking machinery to the Admiralty, War Office, India Office, shipbuilding firms, and railway companies.[3] The Tottenham site was known as St Anna Works.[2]

Later, the company’s head office address was listed as 59 Farringdon Road, London EC1, while the St Anna Works factory operated in Overbury Road, Tottenham (London N15).[2]

C. D. Monninger specialised in:

  • Bandsaw blades and circular saws
  • Saw-doctoring and sharpening machinery
  • Blade setting gauges and cutter blocks
  • Files and woodworking accessories

The company published illustrated catalogues describing its equipment, which remain of interest to woodworking historians and collectors.[2]

Later years

In 1960, C. D. Monninger was acquired by Harper Engineering and Electronics.[1] It was later integrated into Leitz Tooling UK in March 1990.[4] which included a move in operations from Tottenham to a purpose-built facility in Harlow, Essex.[5]

Legacy

C. D. Monninger was among the oldest British saw and tooling manufacturers. Its products were widely used in heavy industry and by government contractors. Today, surviving examples of its machinery and catalogues are collected by enthusiasts of woodworking and industrial history.[2]
