Bridgett Christian Lewis is an American politician and homeland security professional serving as the Torrance City Council member for District 2, representing West Torrance, California.[1] Born in Bluefield, West Virginia, she holds advanced degrees and certifications in public administration, homeland security, and emergency management, and leads key security operations at one of the busiest ports in the United States. She is the first Black woman elected to public office in Torrance’s 111-year history.[2]
Early life and education
[edit]Lewis was born in Bluefield, West Virginia, and began her law enforcement career at age 19, inspired by a friend serving as a police officer.[3] She earned both a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Public Administration (MPA) from the University of Akron in Ohio, and completed a Human Resources Certificate from California State University, Dominguez Hills.[1]
Professional career
[edit]Lewis serves as the Manager of Security Operations at the Port of Long Beach, part of the busiest seaport complex in the United States.[4] She directs the Central California Maritime Coordination Center (MCC), a Department of Homeland Security interagency operations hub uniting more than 80 law enforcement agencies to address maritime threats such as human trafficking, narcotics smuggling, and terrorism.[3] The MCC is nationally recognized for its intelligence-sharing model.[4]
In 2024, Lewis was named the Homeland Security Today Person of the Year (Local) for her leadership in maritime security, her work updating California’s Maritime Security Strategy, her role in the California Coastal Regional Maritime Domain Awareness Committee, and her contributions to education as a part-time homeland security instructor at California State University, Long Beach.[5]
Political career
[edit]Lewis served more than six years on the Torrance Civil Service Commission, including two years as Chair, and was a member of its Employee Relations Committee.[1]
In August 2022, she was appointed to the District 2 seat on the Torrance City Council after then-Councilmember George K. Chen was elected mayor.[6] On March 5, 2024, Lewis was elected outright, earning nearly 54% of the vote.[2]
As a councilmember, she chairs the Strategic Plan Committee and serves on the Transportation and Community Planning & Design Committees.[1] She also represents Torrance on the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) Transportation Committee, which develops regional transportation and air quality policies.[1]
