Bibhakar Ranjan is an Indian-born dental surgeon based in Bonn, Germany,[1] who formerly worked in India and the Seychelles Island.[2] He serves as the International Ambassador and the Southern Africa Continental President of the Dental AI Association (DAIA),[3] an organization formed in 2025 to support the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in dental practice.[4] In 2022, Ranjan was recognized as one of the world's Top 100 Doctors by the Global Summit Institute[2][5] for his contributions to preventive oral healthcare, particularly among cancer patients,[6] pregnant women[7], and individuals recovering from substance abuse.[8]

Early life and education

[edit]

Ranjan was born in Dehri-on-sone, Bihar, India, into a family with a strong academic background. His father, a retired professor, and a family of dental professionals influenced his career path,[2] while his grandmother's death from oral cancer during his childhood inspired his focus on combating the disease.[9] Ranjan completed his schooling in Dehri-on-sone up to the 12th standard.[10]

In 2006, he enrolled at SJM Dental College and Hospital in Chitradurga, Karnataka, under Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Bangalore, to study dentistry. After graduating in 2011,[11] he worked for 5 years at a charitable hospital in Mumbai, providing free dental care to underserved communities, often focusing on oral cancer patients.[2]

After visiting Seychelles as a tourist in 2016, he relocated there in 2019 to join a multispecialty clinic in southern Mahe islands.[11]

Career and contributions

[edit]

Ranjan has addressed complex oral health issues throughout his career, Initially as the principal dentist at a private multispecialty clinic in Seychelles, and later in Bonn, Germany.[1] He developed "Sound & Music Therapy" for patients with dental phobia, using guided meditative music inspired by his yogic training to reduce anxiety during treatments.[12]

In 2021, he emphasized the importance of dental care for breast cancer patients, noting that chemotherapy can cause oral complications like oral mucositis and infections, requiring proactive management.[6] He also highlighted maternal oral health, explaining that pregnancy-related hormonal changes increase gum disease risk, potentially impacting both mother and baby.[7]

Ranjan further addressed the oral health challenges by drug abusers in Seychelles, where nearly 10% of the population is reported to be addicted to heroin and other drugs.[13] He highlighted that substance abuse often leads to severe dental decay and gum disease, complicating recovery.[8]

Artificial Intelligence

[edit]

In 2024, Ranjan was appointed as the Continental President of the Dental AI Association (DAIA).[14] He leads global efforts to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into dental practice.[3] Ranjan has stated that the combination of AI and robotics could help reduce the healthcare workforce burden in densely populated countries such as India, while also improving precision in the surgical procedures.

He commented on the world's first AI robotic dental procedure in 2024, reflecting his engagement with emerging technologies.[15] Ranjan has also advocated for the use of AI in dentistry to ease workload pressure, lower the rising cost of dental treatments in India, and promote early diagnosis and intervention.[16]

Health Podcast Show

[edit]

Ranjan hosts Seychelles' first health podcast show "Dr. Ranjan Speaks", discussing topics related to oral health and wellness.[17]

In the podcast's first episode, titled "How often should you change your toothbrush? Essential tips for dental health," he discusses the frequency of changing toothbrushes, and proper brushing techniques.[18]

According to Ranjan most people do not really know how to use a toothbrush, which often leads to sensitivity and pain in the tooth.[19]

A 2024 episode on the eve of International Yoga Day, titled "Embracing Yoga: Benefits, Myths and Practical Tips," featured yoga guru Deepak ji, who discussed yoga's benefits for various age groups, its role in managing chronic health conditions and impact on stress reduction and sleep for pregnant women.[20]

[21] Since 2019, he has appeared on the national television program ''Topik Konversasyon" on the Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation (SBC) [22] , where he highlighted the challenges and preparations of healthcare professionals during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Ranjan has also appeared on other prominent television and radio platforms in Seychelles, including Télésesel[23], SBC Radyo Sesel[24] and PureFM,[25] where he promoted oral health awareness on topics such as dental phobia and dental decay. He has authored a children's book focused on a child's journey to overcoming dental phobia, scheduled for release by the end of 2025.[26]

Internationally, Ranjan is cited in mainstream media India Today[9], Seychelles News Agency, Seychelles Nation and The Indian Express for his expertise on oral cancer prevention, regenerative dentistry,[27] risks of alcohol-based mouthwashes,[28][29] and preventive dental care.[30][31] He has contributed articles to the Seychelles News Agency addressing broader health issues such as Alzheimer's, cardiovascular disease and cancer awareness, emphasizing the increasing burden of these diseases in Seychelles.[32][33][1][34]

On the occasion of World Health Day, Ranjan emphasized the importance of promoting oral health awareness in both Seychelles and India, particularly among young schoolchildren to encourage early intervention and treatment.[35][36] He has also advocated for the implementation of school dental health program to provide regular dental check-ups for children.[37]
