Isabella Clair Gaetino (born August 27, 2005) is an American college soccer player who plays as a center back for the North Carolina Tar Heels. She won the 2024 national championship with the Tar Heels.
Early life
[edit]Gaetino grew up in Dexter, Michigan, one of four children born to Katherine and Brandon Gaetino. Her mother played college soccer at Virginia Tech; her father played at Bucknell; and her older sister, Eva, plays professionally for Paris Saint-Germain.[1] She attended Dexter High School and played ECNL club soccer for the Michigan Hawks.[1] She also played for Flint City AFC and was named in the USL W League Team of the Season as an attacking midfielder in 2023.[3] Before starting college, she trained as a non-roster invitee with NWSL teams Kansas City Current and North Carolina Courage.[4]
College career
[edit]Gaetino played in all 27 games (25 starts) for the North Carolina Tar Heels in her freshman season in 2024.[1] She was converted to central defense, featuring primarily alongside fellow freshman Trinity Armstrong.[5] She scored two goals in the NCAA tournament and played all but eight minutes of the competition, helping North Carolina allow only one goal in six games as they won their 23rd national title and first since 2012.[1][6] She finished the season with five goals and two assists and was named to the ACC all-freshman team and TopDrawerSoccer Freshman Best XI second team.[1]
