Believe in People, Inc. is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization in the United States founded by billionaire industrialist Charles Koch.[1] With a donation of $4.3 billion from Koch in 2022, it received the largest single contributions ever made to such an entity.[2]
History
[edit]The organization, tax-exempt since 2015, was originally incorporated as Freedom C4, Inc. and later operated under the name TSN Institute before being rebranded in 2021.[3][4][5] It derives its current name from Koch’s 2020 book Believe in People: Bottom-Up Solutions for a Top-Down World, co-authored with Brian Hooks.
While its total assets in 2021 amounted to only $188,047, the organization became one of the wealthiest nonprofits in 2022,[6] when Koch donated $4.3 billion of Koch Industries stock.[1]
Mission and activities
[edit]According to its filings, grants are made "for the purpose of supporting entities and individuals working to move society toward one more fully characterized by equal rights and mutual benefit, where people succeed by helping others improve their lives and everyone has the opportunity to fulfil their potential."[5]
Most of the organization’s grants have gone to other nonprofits associated with the Koch family, mainly within the Stand Together network.[2]
The foundation is part of a larger move by Koch to leave most of his wealth to his network of organizations.[7] According to Forbes, the decision to use a newly restructured 501(c)(4) organization instead of donating directly to the Stand Together network was made because this structure allows direct engagement in political campaigns and an unlimited amount of issue lobbying.[2]
Structure and leadership
[edit]Chase Koch, Charles Koch’s son, serves as chairman of the organization. Other directors include Koch Industries co-CEO Dave Robertson, Stand Together CEO Brian Hooks, and Koch Industries vice president for human resources Dale Gibbens.[5]
