Bay Atlantic University Bay Atlantic University (BAU) is a private, non-profit established in 2014 and located in Washington, D.C., near the White House. The university focuses on degree programs in fields such as Business, Politics, and STEM. Its motto is "Peace through Education" and its mascot is the Dolphin.
History
[edit]Bay Atlantic University was founded in 2014 as a private, non-profit institution in Washington, D.C.. It was granted a license to operate as an institution of higher education by the District of Columbia Higher Education Licensure Commission (HELC) on May 2, 2014, and enrolled its first MBA cohort that fall.[1]
The university held its first commencement ceremony in May 2016. In 2017, it began enrolling undergraduate students in programs such as Political Science and Economics, and received approval to offer several new degree programs in business and information technology.[2]
In January 2019, the institution's name was officially changed from "BAU International University" to "Bay Atlantic University."[3] The university was granted approval to offer distance education programs in 2020 by its then-accreditor, ACICS. [4] That same year, it received its first state-funded grant through the Department of Employment Services (DOES).[5]
BAU was granted initial accreditation by the NECHE on March 9, 2023.[6] The university received its 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status in February 2024.[7]
Campus
[edit]Bay Atlantic University's campus is located at 1510 H St NW in downtown Washington, D.C., two blocks from the White House and near Lafayette Square.[8] Situated in the city's central business district, its location provides access to numerous U.S. government agencies, embassies, NGOs, and international institutions, including the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.[9]
The campus facilities occupy over 83,000 square feet and include classrooms, a library, computer labs, a student union known as "The Bay," and a writing center.[10] [11] It is also home to the Global Policy Institute (GPI), a think tank that focuses on international security, economics, and global affairs.[12]
Student Housing
[edit]The university provides student housing at a complex called Island Condos, located in the Brookland neighborhood of Washington, D.C..[13] The residence is approximately four miles from the main campus and offers single, double, triple, and quadruple room configurations.[14] The university provides a shuttle bus service to connect the housing complex with the main campus.[15]
Academics
[edit]Bay Atlantic University offers bachelor's and master's degree programs. The university is organized into several schools, including the School of Information Science and Engineering (SISE).[16] Fields of study include business administration, political science, as well as STEM programs such as software engineering and AI.[17]
Accreditation and licensure
[edit]Bay Atlantic University is accredited by the NECHE on March 9, 2023.[18] It is licensed to operate and award degrees by the District of Columbia Higher Education Licensure Commission (HELC).[19] The university is also authorized by the SEVP to enroll international students with F-1 visas.[20]
Rankings
[edit]In 2024, the Washington Business Journal ranked Bay Atlantic University's full-time MBA program among the five largest in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.[21]
The university has also been recognized by Intelligent.com, which ranked its MBA program 26th out of 380 programs and its Master of Science in Cybersecurity program 22nd out of 289 programs in its national listings.[22] [23] Additionally, Higher Education Review has recognized the university for its programs in business analytics and data science.[24]
Research
[edit]The university is home to the Global Policy Institute (GPI), a think tank that conducts research on global affairs, economics, and international security.[25]
