Baikowski SA is a French manufacturer of specialty industrial minerals, notably high-purity alumina and other fine oxides used in technical ceramics, precision polishing, electronics, lighting and battery materials.[1][2] The company is headquartered in Poisy, Haute-Savoie, and operates production sites in France, the United States and Japan.[3] Its main factory in Poisy is listed among the leading chemical manufacturing plants in the Auvergne–Rhône–Alpes region in rankings compiled by L'Usine Nouvelle's Industrie Explorer database.[4] Baikowski’s shares have been listed since 2018 on the Euronext Growth Paris market under the ticker symbol ALBKK.[5][6]

History

[edit]

According to French financial and business press, the company traces its origins to 1904, when Moïse and Lazare Baikowski founded a business in Boulogne-sur-Seine to produce synthetic corundum for the watchmaking and jewellery industries. The enterprise later relocated to the Annecy region, shifting its focus from synthetic gemstones to high-purity alumina and other oxides for industrial applications.[1]

In the late 20th century, Baikowski became the specialty chemicals division of PSB Industries [fr], a French group active in packaging and specialty chemicals.[7] Under this ownership it developed its portfolio of fine oxide products and expanded internationally, including industrial operations in North America and Asia.[1]

In 2018, PSB Industries announced a spin-off of Baikowski and the listing of its shares on Euronext Growth Paris, distributing one Baikowski share for each PSB Industries share. The transaction was presented as a way to allow Baikowski to operate as an independent company focused on niche markets for high-purity alumina and specialty oxides.[6][7]

In 2019, regional business media reported that Baikowski had acquired Mathym SAS, a nanotechnology firm based near Lyon that specialises in inorganic nanodispersions for biomedical, ceramic, printing and catalyst applications; the deal was described as Baikowski’s first external growth operation.[3]

In 2024, Le Journal des Entreprises reported that Baikowski had been selected as a laureate of the French government’s France 2030 [fr] investment plan for its “ABC – Alumine Bas Carbone” project, aimed at decarbonising alumina production at its Poisy site.[8]

Activities and applications

[edit]

Baikowski specialises in high-purity alumina powders and other oxides such as spinel and yttrium aluminium garnet (YAG).[2] Its materials are used in several high-technology fields:

  • Technical standards: According to the certificate of analysis for Standard Reference Material 676a, a corundum powder reference for quantitative phase analysis by X-ray diffraction, the alumina used for this National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) standard was obtained from Baikowski International Corporation in Charlotte, North Carolina.[9]
  • Technical ceramics and optics: Financial and trade press indicate that Baikowski’s products are used in technical and transparent ceramics for applications including medical devices, aerospace components and lighting, and have been mentioned in reporting on ceramic laser gain media such as Nd:YAG.[1][10]
  • Electronics and semiconductors: Electronic applications, particularly polishing solutions used in the manufacturing of flash memory devices, represent a significant part of the company's activity.[11]
