The term generally refers to the inhabitants of the Delta’s provinces and does not include the populations of Cairo and Alexandria. The Baharwa are considered a major regional group in Egypt. The term Baharwa usually refers to the inhabitants of the following governorates: Sharqia, Dakahlia, Qalyubia, Beheira, Monufia, Gharbia, Kafr El Sheikh, Damietta, Ismailia, Suez, and Port Said. In some classifications, Faiyum is included due to shared cultural and geographic ties.[3][4][5]
The Baharwa share cultural traits typical of the Nile Delta, including local traditions, features of the Lower Egyptian Arabic dialect, social customs rooted in the Delta provinces.
