History
[edit]Between 1987 and 1989, construction began on the first phase of the Azurém Campus. In 1991, the second phase of the Pedagogical Complex began, including the construction of an auditorium with a capacity for 500 people, by the same team responsible for the previous phase.[1] Between 1991 and 1997, the student residences were built, in a project developed by António Coutinhas and Orlando Azevedo, also the authors of the first phase. In 1995, the canteen was inaugurated, designed by the same architects. That same year, the preliminary programme for the campus facilities expansion plan was also drawn up in collaboration with Guimarães City Council.[1] From 1996 to 1999, the School of Engineering was built to a design by José Soalheiro, Teresa Castro and Ana Paula Calheiros. At the same time, between 1996 and 2000, the School of Sciences and Social Sciences was built, designed by Sérgio Fernandez and Alexandre Alves Costa. Also during this period, between 1996 and 2002, the School of Architecture was built, designed by Fernando Távora and José Bernardo Távora.[1] In November 1997, the Preliminary Study for the University Centre was presented, coordinated by architect Miguel Frazão, which defined the main guidelines for the development of the campus. Between 2002 and 2003, the Social Services Centre and the Sports Pavilion were built and the Polymer Engineering Innovation Centre took place between 2006 and 2007, while the Waste Recovery Centre was built in 2007. The Computer Graphics Centre was built between 2007 and 2008.[1]
