The Audio Verse Awards are well-known[1] awards given annually to the best audio dramas[2] as voted by the public.[3][4] The first Audio Verse Awards show was held virtually in 2013 and continues to the present. Historically, voters have preferred indie cult classic productions (such as The Bright Sessions) to their corporate-owned counterparts.[3] Because of the awards' "New Production" categories, the AVAs often are a podcast production's first award,[5] and <are noted to> recognize that podcasting work is often unpaid.[6] The Audio Verse Awards have been called "the Oscars of audio drama."[7] Notable winners of the Audio Verse Awards include Dungeons & Daddies, The Bright Sessions, (etc)
History
[edit]The idea for the Audio Verse awards first came from a thread on the now-defunct internet forum Audio Drama Talk.[8]
Rules
[edit]In order for a production to be eligible, it must be fictional with performance elements, be exclusively in audio format, include significant audio engineering, and it must have released an episode in the year preceding the award season. Nominations open every fall (typically September or October) and voting occurs in the winter (typically November or December. There is a $25 entry fee. Since 2019, nominations behind a paywall are allowed to be nominated.
Anyone is allowed to vote, and the ballot is ranked-choice voting. The more nominees a voter ranks, the more weight their vote holds.
Categories
[edit]The award categories have changed significantly over time. In 2018 onward, vocal performances combined Actor and Actress winners into one category. In 2019, multiple winners were recognized per category.
