ATHAK, is an avant-garde musical project founded in 2008 in Hong Kong. Its style blends progressive rock, Zeuhl, avant-garde music, and jazz fusion. The project has released more fifteen full-length recordings as well as five EPs and two singles. Some of their releases have been covered in progressive music outlets in Europe, Asia, and North America.[1][2][3][4][5][6]

Background and concept

[edit]

Athak was founded by Scarset Vincent in 2008 following earlier artistic experiments in a self-developed methodology called Décomposition, which begun in 1996. The approach involves deconstructing existing art and improvisations to produce layered, organic compositions. That visual art background influences heavily the writing and performing process of Athak's music in its raw, improvised and decomposed approach. [2]

The name ATHAK derives from Attahk (1978), an album by French Zeuhl pioneers Magma.[2] as well as the Hindi word athak or अथक meaning tireless. The project only has one sole permanent member, composing, performing, producing the music, as well as designing the artworks, while occasional collaborators contribute vocals, flute, or piano.[2]

Style and influences

[edit]

Athak’s music incorporates elements of Zeuhl, progressive rock, and avant-garde improvisation. Influences include Magma, John Zorn, King Crimson, Soft Machine, Steve Reich, and Japanese noise and experimental acts such as Ruins and Keiji Haino.[3][2]

Lyrics are performed in a constructed language as well as in French, German, and Latin.[2]
