Draft:Arab Land Initiative

The Arab Land Initiative is a Middle East and North Africa (MENA) regional program led by United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), created to address land governance challenges, such as equitable access to land, tenure security, sustainable development, peacebuilding and climate resilience, across the 22 member countries of the League of Arab States.[1] It was established in 2016 and is coordinated by the Global Land Tool Network (GLTN).[2]

The Initiative is guided by its Reference Group, which holds periodic meetings attended by regional and international organizations including United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UNESCWA), UN-Habitat, League of Arab States, GLTN, Arab Group for the Protection of Nature and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).[3] [4]

The Initiative has convened a number of land-related events in the region, including three Arab Land Conferences. The Third Arab Land Conference[5] was held in 2025 in Rabat Morocco, and was attended by organizations such as the FAO,[6] Land Portal,[7] the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG),[8] UN-Habitat Lebanon,[9] AGREEMAR,[10] and Arab Group for the Protection of Nature (APN).[11] It also convened the Arab States Modern Land Administration for Sustainable Development Forum in Amman, Jordan in 2019.[12]

The Initiative runs a Research Innovation Fund[13] to support students and young researchers in the Arab region to conduct research on land governance topics. It has also been involved in campaigns and reports promoting Women and Land.[14] [15]
