The Allair River is a tributary of the Manjira River in the Indian state of Telangana. It is primarily associated with the Pocharam Dam and Reservoir, constructed across the river between 1916 and 1922. The river and its reservoir play a significant role in irrigation, drinking water supply, and regional biodiversity.
Course
[edit]The Allair River flows through Medak district, Telangana, before merging into the Manjira River. The river’s basin supports agriculture and serves as a local source of irrigation water.
Pocharam Dam and Reservoir
[edit]The Pocharam Dam was built on the Allair River between 1916 and 1922. Located near Pocharam village, about 15 km from Medak and 115 km from Hyderabad, the reservoir provides irrigation and drinking water to the surrounding region. Unlike many other dams, it does not have floodgates; excess water overflows, creating a scenic "wall of water" effect during the monsoon.
The reservoir has become a popular tourist attraction, known for fishing, boating, and bird watching. An island at the centre of the reservoir, accessible by boat, is home to a variety of shrubs and serves as a habitat for birds.
Pocharam Wildlife Sanctuary
[edit]The Pocharam Wildlife Sanctuary was established around the reservoir, covering approximately 130 km². Originally a hunting ground of the Nizam of Hyderabad, it was declared a sanctuary in the early 20th century.
The sanctuary hosts a range of fauna, including leopard, wolf, jackal, sloth bear, nilgai, sambar, chinkara, and four-horned antelope. It is also a haven for migratory birds such as the Brahminy duck, bar-headed goose, and open-billed stork. The sanctuary attracts eco-tourists and nature lovers, with the best visiting season between October and May.
Tourism and Access
[edit]Pocharam Reservoir is well connected by road. The site is about 110–115 km from Hyderabad, 15 km from Medak, and can be reached via the NH 7 highway. The nearest railway stations are Akkannapet (19 km) and Kamareddy (60 km), while the nearest airport is Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad, approximately 146 km away.
