Draft:Alan Rexroth

Alan Rexroth (*28 April 1973 in Bruchsal) is a German film director, producer and documentary filmmaker. He lives in New York City and Berlin. With his Berlin-based company Angry Buddha Films GmbH, he produces films, commercials and music videos.[1] He is also a jury member of the East Village Film Festival in New York.[2]

Evaluation

[edit]

Rexroth’s work is characterized by a strong connection between narrative storytelling and carefully composed imagery. He uses innovative narrative techniques and technical precision, which make him a sought-after filmmaker for commercials and branded content. His extensive travels to remote regions and his involvement in socially engaged projects, especially in Latin America and the Himalayas, strongly influence his documentary work.

Life and Work

[edit]

At age fifteen, Rexroth took his first steps in filmmaking as part of Medienforum Heidelberg e. V., creating documentary and punk music videos. He was one of the organizers of the Heidelberg Film and Video Days.

While studying political science and history, he worked on local film and media productions such as AV Media and Theobald Media. In 1995 he accompanied the artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude as a filmmaker during the wrapping of the Reichstag building in Berlin.

After an extended stay in Latin America, he joined Filmhaus München, where he worked his way from runner to assistant director and later to editor.

In 1999, Rexroth began working as a freelancer in Berlin. Over the following years he worked as an editor in various post-production houses such as Condor, Das Werk and VCC. There he collaborated with production companies including Neue Sentimental Film, Trigger Happy Productions, Big Fish, Radical Media, RSA and Hungry Man on high-budget commercials. At the same time he directed commercials himself, including work with Amir Kassaei for DDB Berlin/Volkswagen and André Kemper for Mercedes-Benz.

Rexroth’s first feature-length documentary film, El Elefante Blanco (2011), marked his breakthrough as a documentary director. The film portrays the Mercado Adolfo López Mateos as a microcosm of Mexican life and a society searching for meaning in the age of globalization.[3] The film was screened at numerous international film festivals.

His short documentaries #WAY_Aurelio (2024) and #WAY_LamaTenzing (2025) – part of the feature documentary project #WHEREAREYOU – have together won more than 50 international awards.[4]
