The Al Habtoor Group is a diversified conglomerate based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Founded in 1970 by Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor, the group has grown with the development of the UAE and operates in several sectors, including hospitality, automotive, real estate, education, construction, and publishing.[1][2]
History
[edit]The company was established in 1970 as Al Habtoor Engineering by Khalaf Ahmad Al Habtoor, who was born in 1949 in Dubai's Shindagha neighborhood.[3] The group's first major construction contract was to build the UAE's second hospital in 1977, awarded by Sheikh Rashid Al Maktoum.[4][5]
In 1983, the group entered the automotive industry by establishing Al Habtoor Motors, which became the exclusive distributor for Mitsubishi in Dubai.[6] The group expanded its portfolio by founding Emirates International School in 1991 and launching Al Shindagah magazine in 1993.[7]
In 2007, the group formed a joint venture with the Australian Leighton Group, creating the Habtoor Leighton Group (HLG), which became a major regional construction contractor.[8]
Business Divisions
[edit]Hospitality
[edit]The late 1970s marked the beginning of the group's hospitality operations with the establishment of the Metropolitan Hotel in February 1979[9]. The hospitality division, operating under Habtoor Hospitality, manages a portfolio of luxury hotels both domestically and internationally.[10] The Dubai properties include the Al Habtoor City Hotel Collection, Waldorf Astoria Dubai Palm Jumeirah, and Al Habtoor Grand Resort. International properties are located in London, Vienna, Budapest, Beirut, and Springfield, Illinois.[11][12]
Automotive
[edit]A major diversification milestone occurred in 1983 with the establishment of Al Habtoor Motors LLC. Al Habtoor Motors LLC holds exclusive distribution rights for multiple brands in the UAE, including Mitsubishi, JAC Motors, Chery, and premium marques such as Bentley, Bugatti, Pagani, Rimac, and Czinger.[13] For seven consecutive years (2011-2017), Al Habtoor Motors held the title of "Number 1 Bentley Dealer in the World".[14]
Real Estate
[edit]The Al Habtoor Real Estate division manages commercial and residential properties, with the flagship development being Al Habtoor City.[15] The division also announced the Al Habtoor Tower in 2023, an 81-story residential skyscraper designed to be one of the world's tallest residential buildings with 1,701 units.[16] [17][18][19]
Education
[edit]The group operates two IB World Schools in Dubai: Emirates International School - Jumeirah and Emirates International School - Meadows.[20] Emirates International School - Jumeirah was established in 1991[21] and was the first school in Dubai authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme and is one of only seven schools worldwide authorized to offer all four IB programmes.[22][23]
Vehicle Leasing
[edit]Diamondlease L.L.C, a fully owned subsidiary of the Al Habtoor Group, was established in 1996 to offer automotive rental and leasing solutions as an alternative to owning and maintaining vehicles for corporate and individual customers in UAE.[24]. The company was formed to address growing demand and today provides a variety of outsourced transportation solutions to corporate and individual clients across the UAE. Diamondlease is an ISO 9001:2015 certified company with a fleet of over 14,000 dealer-maintained vehicles.[25]
Publishing
[edit]In 1993, Khalaf Al Habtoor established Al Habtoor Publishing, launching Al Shindagah magazine. This publication covers Middle Eastern politics, investments, arts and sports. The magazine became one of the most respected corporate publications in the Middle East, distributed bi-monthly to over 10,000 individuals in business and government. [26]. It was discontinued in 2019.[27]
Notable Projects and Properties
[edit]Al Habtoor City
[edit]A mixed-use development on the Dubai Water Canal, completed in 2018 with a $3 billion investment. The complex includes three residential towers (Noora, Amna, and Meera) and three luxury hotels, plus La Perle by Dragone, a permanent aquatic theater production.[28][circular reference]
Al Habtoor Tower
[edit]An 81-story residential skyscraper under construction, designed to accommodate 1,701 units and achieve LEED Platinum certification.[29][30][31]
Financial Performance
[edit]The group reported 19% revenue growth and 36% EBITDA growth in the first half of 2022 compared to 2021.[32] The hospitality division showed 82% revenue growth and 190% EBITDA growth in H1 2022.[33]
