Akram Sartakhti (Persian: اکرم سرتختی‎; born c. 1950 in Rey, Tehran) is an Iranian self-taught painter associated with naïve art and outsider art. Beginning to paint in her fifties, she has since held multiple solo and group exhibitions in Tehran, most notably at Saless Gallery.

Biography

[edit]

Sartakhti was born around 1950 in Rey, south of Tehran. Sources differ on her exact year of birth, with some noting 1948 and Persian-language databases recording 1329 SH (1950/51).[1][2] She had no formal art education and began painting at about age fifty, reportedly at the request of a grandchild. Interviews emphasize her late start and her reliance on memories, folktales, and lived experience as subject matter.[3]

Work and style

[edit]

Sartakhti is classified as a naïve or outsider artist. Her paintings are narrative and often colorful, depicting autobiographical experiences, dreams, epic tales, and religious stories. Common motifs include birds, ladders, women, and hybrid creatures. She works in oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, and colored pencils on diverse supports such as canvas, board, ceramics, and glass.[4]
