Airbrush is a photo editing application and online service focused on portrait retouching and image enhancement. It offers tools for skin smoothing, blemish removal, teeth whitening, filters, and other photographic adjustments. The application was initially released for mobile devices and has since expanded to include a desktop photo-editing application for Windows and macOS.[1][2][3]

Usage

[edit]

As of August 2025, Airbrush ranked 49th among the top 50 generative AI mobile apps by monthly active users, according to Sensor Tower data reported by TechCrunch.[4]

History

[edit]

Airbrush was launched in 2015 as a mobile photo-editing application. The product is developed by Pixocial Technology, a Singapore-based company that operates as a subsidiary of Meitu, Inc., focusing on international markets.[5] In 2025, Pixocial announced the release of Airbrush Studio, a desktop portrait-editing application available for Windows and macOS.[3]

Funding

[edit]

In 2023, Pixocial Technology completed a Series A financing round of approximately US$22 million, with participation from external investors including Eight Roads, while Meitu retained a stake in the company. The funding was reported to support the company’s international operations and product development efforts.[5]

Features

[edit]

Airbrush is a mobile photo‑editing application with a simple and clear user interface. According to Deutsche Welle, the app is available free of charge for Android and iOS devices and requires registration via e-mail, Facebook, or Google before use.[6] Many of its editing tools are designed specifically for selfies and other facial images.

The application provides both automated and manual editing features, including skin smoothing, blemish removal, background editing, object removal, and other portrait enhancement tools.[7]

Airbrush includes real-time editing tools that allow users to adjust their appearance before capturing a photo. It offers functions such as blemish and pimple removal, teeth whitening, eye brightening, and skin‑tone adjustment. The app provides cosmetic effects, including virtual blush and mascara to simulate makeup. Users can share edited images directly to social media platforms from within the app.[6] This is available on iOS and Android devices, as well as through a web-based interface, with subscription and in-app purchase options for accessing additional features.[1][2][8]

Reception

[edit]

Independent reviews describe Airbrush as user-friendly, allowing one-click editing, and primarily used by casual users and social media creators. Some reviewers note that it offers fewer options than professional desktop photo-editing software.[7] User reviews on platforms such as Capterra reflect a range of experiences, citing ease of use as well as technical and subscription-related concerns.[9] According to Deutsche Welle, the app includes extensive beautification tools, which may influence idealized images, while also providing access to pro-level options via in-app purchases.
