Dr. Asode Ananthram Shetty (born 16 June 1955) is an Indian orthopaedic surgeon, scientist, and academic, widely known as A. A. Shetty in professional and academic circles. He is noted for his work in regenerative medicine and the application of stem cell research in orthopaedics.
Biography
[edit]Shetty was born on 16 June 1955 in Asodu, Kundapur, India. He completed his postgraduate training at Guy's Hospital, King's College London, and St. Thomas’s School of Medicine, London. He holds fellowships including FRCS and FACS.
He resides in Kent, UK, with his wife and daughter.
Career
[edit]Shetty has held academic and clinical positions:
- Emeritus Professor of Orthopaedics and Stem Cell Research, Canterbury Christ Church University, UK.
- Adjunct Professor, KMC Manipal, India.
Research and Innovations
[edit]He co-developed the Autologous Collagen-Induced Chondrogenesis (ACIC: Shetty–Kim technique), a single-stage arthroscopic cartilage repair technique.[1]
Shetty has collaborated with research teams in South Korea, Japan, and India to advance regenerative medicine and stem cell therapy.
Teaching and Leadership
[edit]He was instrumental in establishing the postgraduate surgical program at Canterbury Christ Church University and contributed to its approval to launch an undergraduate medical school.[2]
He also serves as Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Kent and Public Governor of Medway Maritime Hospital.[3]
Philanthropy
[edit]He is involved in supporting education initiatives and offers free surgical care to underserved populations. He was honored at a civic felicitation event in Mangalore for his humanitarian work.[4]
