Draft:2025 global trade war
A global trade war began on April 9, 2025, after the United States imposed reciprocal tariffs on every country.
Background
[edit]Second Trump tariffs
[edit]In March 2025, president Donald Trump imposed an additional ten percent tariff on imports from China and a 25% tariff on most imports from Canada and Mexico, raising fears of a global trade war.[1]
Course of the trade war
[edit]Steel and aluminum tariffs (March 2025)
[edit]On March 12, 2025, a 25% tariff on all imported steel and aluminum in the United States came into effect.[2] The following day, Trump threatened to impose a 200% tariff on alcoholic beverages imported from the European Union after it retaliated against the steel and aluminum tariffs; by the threats, a global trade war had begun, according to The Wall Street Journal.[3] After Trump announced a 25% tariff on imported automobiles, The Washington Post described it as a potentially "major escalation in Trump's global trade war".[4]
Reciprocal tariffs (April 2025)
[edit]On April 9, 2025, Trump's reciprocal tariffs took effect, intensifying the global trade war.[5]
