On 24 April 2025 near the village of Sakoira 12 Nigerien soldiers were killed by armed men the next day five Indian workers were abducted in nearby Kandadji, the Islamic State – Sahel Province are believed to be responsible for both attacks.
Attacks
[edit]On 24 April 2025 suspected ISSP fighters ambushed a Nigerien military unit while on a mission near the village of Sakoira killing 12.[1][2][3][4]
The next day on 25 April militants attacked a a group of men working on power lines near the Kandadji Dam, no one is known to have been killed or injured in the attack but five Indians who were working for the Kalpataru Power Transmission Limited Company were abducted by the attackers. All five men were from the Giridih district of Jharkhand and had been sent to Niger in January 2024, the five men were identified as Sanjay Mahto, Faljit Mahto, Raju Mahto, Chandrika Mahto and Uttam Mahto.[1][5][6][7]
Aftermath
[edit]Shortly after the attack in Sakoira the Nigerien army launched combat operations in the Tillabéri Region, two men were subsequently arrested in connection to the attack.[2][3]
