Saurabh Rajput, a former Merchant Navy officer, was found dead in March 2025 in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, India. The case drew widespread media attention due to the nature of the crime and the alleged involvement of his wife and her acquaintance. Authorities have arrested two individuals in connection with the murder, and legal proceedings are ongoing.[1]
Background
[edit]Saurabh Rajput had served in the Merchant Navy and lived with his wife and daughter in Meerut. According to reports, he returned to India in early March 2025. His wife, Muskan Rastogi, had reportedly been in contact with an acquaintance, Sahil Shukla, through social media since 2019.[2][3]
Incident
[edit]On 4 March 2025, Rajput was reported missing. Following a police investigation, human remains were discovered in a sealed plastic drum filled with cement in the couple’s rented home. The police suspected foul play based on the condition of the remains and inconsistencies in the accounts provided by those close to him.[4][5][6]
Investigation
[edit]During the investigation, the police interrogated Muskan Rastogi and Sahil Shukla. According to statements made by law enforcement to the media, both individuals confessed to their involvement in the killing. It is alleged that Rajput was sedated and then stabbed, and his body was later dismembered. The accused were taken into custody and charged with murder and destruction of evidence.[7][8]
Media Coverage
The case received considerable coverage from Indian news outlets due to its violent nature and the involvement of individuals closely related to the victim. Discussions around domestic violence, marital conflict, and the role of social media in modern relationships were also sparked by the incident.[9][10][11]
