1933 Chevrolet Custom Roadster by Alex Tremulis

The 1933 Chevrolet Custom Roadster by Alex Tremulis is a one-off automobile built in Chicago in 1933 for vaudeville comedian Ralph Cook. The car is notable as the earliest known project associated with American designer Alex Tremulis, who later became chief stylist at Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg and chief of design for the Tucker ’48 Torpedo.

Background

[edit]

In the early 1930s, Tremulis, then only 19 years old and with no formal training in design or engineering, sketched a radical streamlined body for a Chevrolet chassis. The commission came from Ralph Cook, a Chicago-area entertainer who sought an attention-grabbing vehicle.

The result was a futuristic two-seat roadster with an exceptionally long hood, free-standing fenders, and a tall vertical grille described as resembling the pipes of a church organ. Its styling was considered decades ahead of contemporary production automobiles, incorporating early aerodynamic ideas with exaggerated Art Deco proportions.

Exhibition

[edit]

The car was displayed at the Century of Progress International Exposition in Chicago (1933–1934), where it attracted widespread attention from visitors. Among them was designer Gordon M. Buehrig, chief stylist at Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg, who was reportedly impressed enough to offer Tremulis a position on his design staff. This encounter marked the beginning of Tremulis’s professional career in the automotive industry.

Legacy

[edit]

Although never produced or officially recognized by Chevrolet, the custom roadster is regarded by historians as the first milestone in Tremulis’s long design career. Elements of its streamlined form foreshadowed his later work on the Cord 810/812, Duesenberg models, and ultimately the Tucker 48 Torpedo.

The original car survived in deteriorated condition into the 21st century and has appeared at collector car events, sometimes under the designation “Chevrolet Streamliner Custom.”
