Biography

[edit]

The collective was formed by Marine Brutti (born in 1985[1], trained at the Haute École des Arts du Rhin)[2], Jonathan Debrouwer (born in 1985[1], also trained at the Haute École des Arts du Rhin)[2], and Arthur Harel (born in 1990, trained at the Conservatoire municipal Jean-Philippe-Rameau in Paris[1]).

The collective creates works that emerge from their encounters with online communities, blending influences from contemporary dance, jumpstyle, techno dance, and other hybrid forms.

In the media

[edit]

In September 2023, The New York Times published an extensive profile of (La)Horde titled "The New Punk, (La)Horde Style: Working 'for a Brighter Future" by dance critic Gia Kourlas.[3]

The article describes (La)Horde as a pioneering French collective that has redefined contemporary dance through a post-internet and non-binary approach to movement. Founded in 2013 by Marine Brutti, Jonathan Debrouwer, and Arthur Harel, the group has directed the Ballet National de Marseille since 2019, reshaping it into an international ensemble of dancers from sixteen countries.

According to The New York Times, (La)Horde sees dance as “nonbinary,” rejecting traditional hierarchies between classical, contemporary, and street forms. Their philosophy centers on the body as both subject and medium — “the body is at the heart of everything they do.” They promote inclusivity and diversity, creating works that celebrate collective energy and the emotional power of movement.

The feature highlights their collaborations with Sam Smith (“I’m Not Here to Make Friends”, “Unholy”), Spike Jonze (“Ghosts”), and Madonna, for whom they served as artistic directors of choreography for the Celebration Tour. Their own productions, such as Room With a View (created with French electronic composer Rone), explore urgent and cathartic movement inspired by social unrest and the hope for renewal.

The collective defines its ethos through hope and resistance: “The way to be punk today might be to work for a brighter future.” They emphasize a humane, curiosity-driven approach to artmaking, valuing collaboration and emotional authenticity over hierarchy or virtuosity.
