Climate change in Rhineland-Palatinate

Climate change in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate affects various environments and industries.

Greenhouse gas emissions

[edit]

Agriculture accounts for 7% of greenhouse gas emissions in Rhinland-Palatinate.[1]

Impacts of climate change

[edit]

Forests and climate change mitigation

[edit]

Damage to forests due to climate change would make climate change more difficult.[2]

Viticulture

[edit]

Increases in frequency of extreme weather (including droughts,, hail, frost) makes viticulture more difficult to manage.[3]

Groundwater

[edit]

Groundwater is becoming more scarce in the state, due to climate change.[4]

Response

[edit]

The municipality of Landau declared a climate emergency in 2019, and for the 5 subsequent years, there was a year-on-year increase in investment in cycling infrastructure.[5]

Legislation

[edit]

State Climate Protection Act

Summary
climate change mitigation, climate change adaptation
Status: In force (amended)

The state was one of the first states to pass a climate protection law.[6] Under the current version of the legislation, the state will reach net zero emissions by 2040, as compared to 2045 for Germany overall.[7] The state's legislation also requires that electricity will only be generated by renewables by 2030.[8]

In order to meet its obligations under the legislation, the state government is investing significant funding into renewable energy including wind power and solar power.[8]
