Production
[edit]Development
[edit]Border 2 was officially announced by J. P. Dutta, Bhushan Kumar and Sunny Deol on 13 June 2024 marking the film's 27th anniversary. Sunny Deol was announced as the leading man, although the makers did not reveal the other characters in the film.[14]
Casting
[edit]Sunny Deol was approached as the lead hero of film on 14 August 2023 after success of Gadar 2. He revealed that J.P. Dutta wanted to make Border 2 with him in 2015, but at that time Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 had flopped and his other films were also not doing well, so Dutta dropped the idea of making Border 2. Deol was also afraid because the characters from the original film were very loved. When he watches the film today, he wants to see a natural extension of those characters. Deol feels like doing the film, but believes the story should justify bringing back the character, so that those who come to watch the film and expect the same enjoyment are not disappointed—just like the fun they experienced in his film Gadar 2. After Gadar 2 became a blockbuster, preparations for Border 2 began, and the film was offered to him. Deol has agreed to do it.[3][15]
The makers of Border 2 first approached Ayushmann Khurrana for a supporting role. However, later it was reported that Ayushmann Khurrana will not be a part of it. Whether Ayushmann did not accept the role or the makers dropped him, there is no confirmation regarding this.[16]
The makers of Border 2 brought Varun Dhawan on board to play one of the key roles in the ensemble cast. The actor was confirmed to be part of the film during the announcement of the new lineup, which includes Sunny Deol, Diljit Dosanjh and Ahan Shetty.[17] His involvement was further highlighted when behind-the-scenes footage from the shoot was released.[18]
Diljit Dosanjh was initially announced as part of Border 2, with the actor beginning shoot for the film alongside Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan and Ahan Shetty.[19] However, later reports suggested that dosanjh may no longer be part of the project, allegedly due to controversies surrounding his other film commitments. Whether the actor opted out or the makers replaced him has not been officially confirmed.[20]
Ahan Shetty joined the cast of Border 2 as one of the new recruits in the war-drama ensemble. His casting was officially announced when Sunny Deol welcomed him to the film's battalion.[21] Reports also stated that Ahan's character has connections to Suniel Shetty's role from the original Border (1997), echoing a generational link within the narrative.[22]
Mona Singh joined Border 2 as the female lead opposite Sunny Deol. Reports and teaser show she will play role of Fateh Singh Kaler's wife played by Sunny Deol[23]
Medha Rana joined the cast of Border 2 as female lead opposite Varun Dhawan.[24] While the makers have not officially revealed details about her character, industry sources indicate that her arc forms one of the central emotional threads connected to dhawan's storyline.[25]
Sonam Bajwa joined as second female lead alongside Diljit Dosanjh.[26] Although her character's details remain undisclosed, sources suggest she portrays a role linked to the personal side of the soldiers' lives.[27]
Filming
[edit]Principal photography for Border 2 began in early 2025, with shooting conducted across multiple locations in India. The initial schedule took place in Jhansi, Madhya Pradesh, where portions of the film featuring lead actors were shot in January 2025.[28]
A major portion of the film was shot at the National Defence Academy (NDA), Pune, during the third production schedule. Cast members Sunny Deol, Diljit Dosanjh, Varun Dhawan, and Ahan Shetty participated in scenes depicting military training and character introductions. The NDA schedule concluded in June 2025 and included staged drills and academy-based sequences, with NCC cadets appearing as background performers.[29]
Additional schedules were filmed in Halduwala, Dehradun (Uttarakhand), as well as in Punjab, including Amritsar, where village and military camp sequences were shot. Portions of the Amritsar schedule were completed by mid-2025, following which select cast members wrapped their individual shooting commitments.[30][31] Reports later stated that the film’s climax sequence was planned as a large-scale shoot scheduled for December 2025, involving extensive action set pieces.[32]
Release
[edit]Border 2 is scheduled for theatrical release on 23 January 2026, aligning with India's Republic Day weekend. The first poster and the release date were unveiled on India's 79th Independence Day, with the film's tagline Hindustan ke liye ladenge... phir ek baar! (We will fight for India… once again!) prominently featured to evoke patriotic sentiment.[33][34]
