Benawa Besar (lit. 'Great Benawa') is a small island located in Balikpapan Bay at Makassar Strait and administratively it is still disputed between Penajam North Paser (Sepaku) and Balikpapan (West Balikpapan), East Kalimantan, Indonesia.[1] Astronomically, this island is located at the coordinate point 1°05′09″S 116°43′40″E / 1.0858828°S 116.7277782°E.[2]
This island functions as a protected area with diverse composition and structure of mangrove vegetation. The tallest species is Rhizophora mucronata. Mangrove trees here are commonly found with diameters ranging between 10 and 20 cm. These trees, reaching heights exceeding 15 m, dominate the area.[3]
